Whether the business world is ready for it or not, video conferencing and telepresence are on the rise.
Forbes technology blogger Kym McNichols reported recently that, according to Wainhouse Research, video use for communication via computer is predicted to increase by 28 percent in 2011.
She also reported that telepresence will take 2.1 million air travelers out of the skies by 2010, as predicted by Gartner research. The research firm also forecasts that 200 million workers globally will run corporate video conferencing from their desktops by 2015.
"Ultimately, your computer's going to be the main source of communication, even by phone, so you might as well get used to it. Especially video." wrote McNicholas.
In light of that news, McNicholas advises businessmen and women to keep a clean, orderly backdrop for video conferences to best promote a company's brand.
"You should have a company logo behind you and not that picture of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie," McNicholas wrote.
As the popularity of video conferencing has increased, the video conferencing services market has grown. The market grew 11 percent through 2008, reporting revenues of more than $265.4 million, according to new analysis from Frost & Sullivan.
