Video conferencing technology crucial to small businesses

Entrepreneur magazine has listed video conferencing technology, web conferencing and other internet-based communication strategies among the five high-tech business trends to watch in 2011.

"From smartphones to GPS navigation systems, technology is everywhere in 2011," writes Scott Steinberg for the magazine.

Small businesses that want to stay ahead of the curve need to be prepared to invest heavily in technological innovation as the new year progresses. Technology is evolving at a breakneck pace that waits for no one, so failure to be up-to-date on the latest trends all but guarantees that a business will fall behind its competitors, who are leveraging these new systems. A business that is using feature phones to communicate, for example, would never be able to outpace a competitor that is using iPhones.

Video conferencing is one technology that will continue to mature in 2011, Steinberg posits. Although they require some upfront investment, video conferencing systems and web-based devices will "aid considerably in facilitating face-to-face communications without tanking your travel budget," he writes. also recently expressed its confidence that web conferencing would be an important technology in 2011. Contributor Shane O'Neill wrote that "it's almost a guarantee" that organizations will increase their bandwidth in the new year to facilitate the adoption of this kind of communication.
